Car Maintenance: An important
Consumer Responsibility
It's not wise to start out a trip with
balding tires. They might not get you much farther than an empty gas tank. Yet
consumers often have misplaced confidence in many worn or defective components
in their cars. Poor car maintenance can make daily trips around town trips
that all too often end in tragedy.
This sobering fact comes to light each October during National Car Care Month,
when motorists can have their vehicles inspected free of charge in cities
throughout the U.S.
"Year after year we see nine out of 10 vehicles fail inspection for
various reasons says Car Care Council President, Don Midgley. "Common
reasons for or vehicles to fail, in addition to excessive exhaust emissions,
are tires, engine oil, lights and windshield wiper blades."
According to the American Automobile Association's survey of 1,500 motorists:
- 28% had at least one problem last year that disabled their vehicle.
- 74% of vehicle owners were familiar or very familiar with the
manufacturers' recommended maintenance schedule, yet only about half
regularly followed those recommendations.
Unlike the truckers, there's no authority taking a family's vehicle off the
road because it needs maintenance. Instead, this usually happens with the
event of mechanical trouble, which takes the vehicle off the road by default.
While car care is the focus for October, consumers should make every month car
care month".
